Big fan of Ultimate Frisbee? This non-contact team sport involves two teams of seven players playing with a disc.

Birmingham has a growing Ultimate scene, thanks in large part to a group, the Birmingham Ultimate Disc Alliance (BUDA). BUDA is an alliance with competitive Ultimate teams playing a series of games in the spring and summer. Want to know one of the coolest things about BUDA? Several players and teams have played competitively with USA Ultimate.

While BUDA has mixed teams open to men and women, this year they are introducing a brand new women-only league. The Birmingham Ultimate Women’s League is here to introduce even more women to the sport. We spoke to one of the women behind the new league to learn more about her inspiration and see why it’s a league you can’t miss.

“We chose to create an all-female league because we want to increase skill and athleticism in the female Ultimate community while encouraging spirited play and creating a stress-free learning environment where all skill levels progress and gain knowledge and experience. Often it can be a little daunting for new women to join a league without prior knowledge of the game.”

The Women’s League will include a weekly lesson on Ultimate Frisbee and the rules of the sport, so any woman who joins will learn something new while playing.

Why join the Birmingham Ultimate Women’s League? Abbey said it best:

“The simple answer is that BUDA leagues create an environment for individuals to meet and compete in community-oriented sport. I think it’s important that our city is home to several community leagues that focus not only on socializing, but physical activity as well.
