Germany pays the EU £ 16.4 billion a year, according to the DPA news agency. The figures for France and Italy are also huge, at £ 8bn and £ 5.3bn respectively.

However, Poland, which has been accused of breaking EU rules, receives £ 10.5 billion more from Brussels each year than it pays.

Hungary, another major beneficiary, is also engaged in a battle with Brussels over the rule of law and judicial independence.

In response, readers of Express.co.uk argued that Boris Johnson should prioritize a CANZUK alliance, rather than cooperating more closely with the EU.

CANZUK is a proposed alliance between the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Its supporters call for free trade, free movement and defense cooperation between the four English-speaking nations.

An Express.co.uk reader wrote: “The EU will never work.

“You can’t just bring together countries with totally different cultures that have their own distinct identities and histories stretching back thousands of years.

“The United States worked because everything was created at the same time, everyone was a European immigrant creating a new country and a new culture.

“This is why the UK should focus on a CANZUK union. A group of nations that share a culture, a history, a family, a language and a head of state.

Another user added: “The EU has no one to blame but itself.

“If they had given David Cameron just a few minor concessions in 2016, just enough for him to sell it to the UK as an improved deal, the referendum would have been the other way around.

“Instead, they treated Cameron with utter contempt and it was just ‘No, No, No’ all the way. Now here is the result.”

EU leaders are locked in disputes with Poland and Hungary over the rule of law and gay rights.

After Hungary passed a law banning the promotion of homosexuality to those under 18, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte suggested that the country “should no longer be part of the European Union”.

CANZUK International, founded by Toronto-based James Skinner in 2015, advocates for the suggested alliance.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Skinner insisted that CANZUK would be very different from the EU.

He said: “It would be very different from what the structure of the EU is.

“So, for example, where the EU has taken the path of a European Parliament, an EU committee, a centralized currency, a centralized judiciary, CANZUK would be nothing of the sort. and we would never advocate that this be the case. .

“What we have always advocated is that these countries would work as independent sovereign countries on the international stage, working together on initiatives such as reciprocal migration, trade and foreign policy.”

Canada’s main opposition, the Conservative Party of Canada, has adopted support for CANZUK as one of its official positions.

In Britain last year a group of Conservative, Labor and DUP MPs formed the all-party parliamentary group for CANZUK in parliament.
