Leaders of Nonprofits Create Black Executive Director Alliance of Detroit to Empower Each Other, Youth

DETROIT – Black executives came together to create a new alliance to empower themselves and empower young people.

They are executive directors of several nonprofit organizations in Detroit. Their nonprofits are all designed to help children.

“We were having conversations and just talking about the lack of support for the well-being of the city’s black executive directors and then long-term sustainability plans,” Kimberly Johnson said.

Johnson is the President and CEO of Devoting Kids. She is also a co-founder of the Black Executive Director Alliance of Detroit (BEDAD). The other co-founder of BEDAD is Denise Hayes, she is also CEO of Atlantic Impact.

BEDAD was created to be a resource and advocate for nonprofit black executives.

“A lot of us, we come from this community. We are from Detroit. So we come back to give back and to serve, ”Johnson said.

The alliance is made up of nine black nonprofit founders who are making plans to help lead youth development organizations.

“We need this support to ensure we are providing services to the youth of the city of Detroit over the long term,” said Johnson.

The group will also be committed to racial equity in the non-profit sector of the business world. All the great strides that are being made to help the community as a whole.

“Sometimes we had to overcome a lot of obstacles that often other people of a different racial background don’t have to,” Johnson said. “Representation is very important. When young people watch and they see the career paths that we have chosen and that these are people who are like them. It means something to them.
