Washington, DC, June 15, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The New Civil Liberties Alliance, a nonpartisan, nonprofit civil rights group, is pleased to announce the launch of the Ginsburg-Scalia Fellowship, a program summer school for working law students in Washington DC NCLA launches the scholarship to honor the legendary friendship of former Supreme Court justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia and to promote their legacy of civility. Eighteen students engaged in civil intellectual discourse—nine Ginsburg Scholars and nine Scalia Scholars—will attend eight weekly dinner lectures led by renowned jurists and judges, including Randy Barnett (Georgetown), the Hon. Janice Rogers Brown (CDAC, retired), Don Elliott (Yale), Philip Hamburger (Columbia), Gary Lawson (Boston), Jennifer Mascott (Scalia), Hon. Neomi Rao (CDAC) and John Yoo (UC-Berkeley).
The scholarships are offered on a competitive basis to applicants who show a commitment to the collegiate tradition of Justices Ginsburg and Scalia. Selected individuals will spend the summer lecture series exploring the denial of fundamental constitutional rights by the administrative state: freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of religion, due process, jury trial, and protection from unreasonable searches. . The Ginsburg-Scalia Fellowship Program will provide highly motivated emerging leaders in the legal community with first-hand experience in discussing deep ideological issues with courtesy and collegiality. As a nonpartisan group, the NCLA selected fellows from both sides of the aisle, nominated to participate by the law firms where they work as summer associates.
The 2022 Summer Class of Ginsburg-Scalia Elected Scholars are Daniel Blatt, Eric Bush, Robert Capodilupo, Tanvi Datani, Connie Gong, Charles Jetty, Abigail Keller, Logan Kirkpatrick, Kristen Miluski, Vanessa Moody, Thomas Moore, Peter Povilonis, Elle Rogers, Jack Shapiro, Mikayla Sherman, Jacob Smith, Jared Stehle and Charles Tammons. Fellowship participants are drawn from a variety of top-notch law schools, including the University of Chicago Law School, Georgetown University Law Center, George Washington University School of Law, the Harvard Law School, University of Michigan Law School, and Northwestern Pritzker Law School. , Stanford Law School, University of Virginia Law School, and Yale Law School.
Fellows work as summer associates at a range of prestigious law firms: Boies Schiller Flexner LLP; Consovoy McCarthy PLLC; Cooper & Kirk LLC; Covington & Burling LLP; Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP; Jones Day; Kirkland & Ellis LLP; Latham & Watkins LLP; Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP; Sidley Austin LLP; White & Case LLP; and Williams & Connolly LLP.
The Fellowship opened with an introductory dinner and a visit to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to see an opera (Judges Ginsburg and Scalia were noted opera-goers), and will end with a civil debate and public between two notable lawyers and two fellows. that address a key constitutional issue from opposing ideological perspectives. This final debate will celebrate the non-partisan nature of fundamental civil liberties, as well as the role of the legal profession in protecting these liberties from the encroachments of the administrative state.
Each Fellow-Elect who completes the program will receive a $1,000 honorarium and be eligible to attend all future events open to program alumni.
