Star Alliance adds paid lounge access in Rio de Janeiro

Star Alliance has opened its third branded lounge to paid access, with the group’s facilities at Rio de Janeiro airport being the latest to offer the service.

Subject to availability, passengers can now pre-book lounge access at a cost of USD 55 for three hours, regardless of membership status or cabin class.

Star Alliance also said that “passengers will also receive a discount if they are members of a Star Alliance member airline’s frequent flyer program.”

Star Alliance Gold customers and those traveling in eligible cabin classes of Star Alliance member airlines will continue to enjoy complimentary lounge access, located on Level 3 of the airport’s International Departures Pier.

The lounge can accommodate up to 150 people and features handmade furniture by local designers and offers views of downtown Rio and Sugar Loaf Mountain.

The group’s Rio de Janeiro lounge is the third to offer paid access, after Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires and more recently Los Angeles International Airport.

Commenting on the news, Star Alliance Vice President of Customer Experience Christian Draeger said:

“At Star Alliance, we are always looking to see how we can do more to provide passengers with a seamless and exceptional experience. The addition of Rio De Janeiro as the third Star Alliance lounge to offer paid access is a step in this direction.

“Now more passengers can relax and enjoy this beautiful space before a flight. Online pre-booking also makes the process very simple, so passengers can plan ahead and get to the lounge without any hassle.

“We are welcoming more passengers to our Star Alliance lounge in Rio and will explore expanding paid access to more of our lounges in the future.”
