SALINEVILLE — Two juniors from Southern Local High School have been chosen as delegates for the Ohio American Legion’s 2022 Buckeye Boys and Girls State programs this summer.

Students Eric Colussy and Grace Brothers will represent the school at events June 12-19, with Colussy traveling to the University of Miami at Oxford and Brothers traveling to Mount Union University at Alliance. They are sponsored by the American Legion John Adams Post 442 in Salineville.

Colussy, the son of Dean and Melissa Colussy of Wellsville, plays baseball for the SLHS Indians.

Brothers, of Summitville, is the daughter of Brandon Brothers and Emily Cope and has been active in volleyball, student council, Spanish Club and Blue Crew.

Buckeye Boys State, which began in 1936, is the nation’s largest program with more than 1,200 delegates attending each year. There, the boys gain practical experience of how a democratic form of government works, how political parties are organized, and their role in forming the government of the state. Buckeye Girls State is designed to educate young women about the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of good citizenship. Participants learn more about city, county, and state government in a week than they will in an entire semester of school.
