LUCKNOW: UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is due to lay the foundation stone on Tuesday for the much-anticipated Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) commando training center in Saharanpur – a development that could presumably arm BJP to amplify its “nationalist” position before the next state elections.
The center will be established in Deoband which also houses the famous Islamic seminary Darul Uloom. Straddling more than 2000 square meters, the center is proposed to train a hundred commandos who will keep a hawk eye in the community sensitive region of the west of the UP. It will also have at least 15 IPS agents on duty. The UP government plans to set up such ATS centers in other locations as well, including Meerut, Bahraich, Shravasti and GB Nagar.
“This is a crucial project for the security of the region and for strengthening the sense of nationalism among the people,” said BJP Saharanpur District Chairman Mahendra Saini, confirming Yogi’s route through the district on Tuesday. It will be the second key project in the district, after Ma Shakumbhari Devi University, the cornerstone of which was laid by Union Interior Minister Amit Shah last month.
The development also comes close in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who stepped up the party’s development program in the region by laying the foundation stone for Jewar Airport in GB Nagar and Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut.
The BJP found Saharanpur to be politically difficult terrain, although it won four – Deoband, Gangoh, Rampur Maniharan (SC) and Nakur – out of seven at the 2017 assembly when the Saffron group took over. power with an overwhelming majority. Saharanpur (Dehat) and Behat were won by Congress while the Samajwadi party won the seat of Saharanpur (city).
In 2012, the BJP could only record a victory in Saharanpur Nagar. In fact, the SP which had then come to power with a full majority, too, could only win Deoband. It was the Mayawati BSP that won four seats while Congress won the Gangoh seat.
Experts said that an interesting polling contest is expected in the district which has a large population of Jat, Dalits and Muslims. As the BJP seeks to consolidate the Jats and Dalits, the Samajwadi party led by Akhilesh relies on the support of Muslims. Having entered into an alliance with the RLD led by Jayant Chaudhary, the SP will also seek support from the Jat community. The BSP will help consolidate the Dalit community that reportedly voted for the BJP in the 2017 state polls.
