Durham Global Alliance to show young people other cultures

From annual Chinese New Year celebrations to joint projects with twin communities in Germany, Russia, Denmark, Hungary, the United States and more, the goal is to bring people together, promote respect and improve the lives of young people.

By training the DGA, partners will be able to coordinate activities more effectively and ensure the best use of combined resources, as well as measure progress more holistically.

The DGA will work primarily with young people aged four to 30 from across County Durham and will include representatives from a wide range of organizations including colleges, schools, arts groups, charities, the voluntary sector and industry.

Another key partner will be the British Council Internationalism Alliance, which aims to provide every young person from all walks of life the opportunity to learn and connect with others in the UK and around the world.

The DGA was officially launched at a civic welcome event for international students at Durham City Hall. It was hosted by the Mayor of Durham, Cllr Arnie Simpson, and the Chairman of Durham County Council, Cllr Watts Stelling.

International students from Durham University were in attendance, as well as Professor Claire O’Malley, the university’s world vice-chancellor, Julia Handelman Smith, head of internationalism at the British Council, and Cllr Amanda Hopgood, head of the Durham County Council.

Its launch included a program of internationally oriented events, including Diwali and Lunar New Year events.

The DGA logo has been unveiled. It was designed by Nathan Eddy of New College Durham as part of a competition for art and design students.

Durham County Council Chief Amanda Hopgood said: “It is so important that children and youth are proud of where they live, but also that they understand that County Durham is part of ‘a much larger national and international community.

“By welcoming our international friends to County Durham, providing them with opportunities to travel and experience other cultures, we can help our children become global citizens and enrich their lives in new and exciting ways. The DGA will ensure that these opportunities are maximized for the benefit of all our residents, but especially our young people.

“Internationalism is also a major focus of County Durham’s bid to become the UK City of Culture 2025, so if you have any ideas for international projects that could be part of the bid we would love to hear from you. ”

Professor Claire O’Malley, Pro-Vice Chancellor Global at Durham University, said: Compete in our globalized world. I am very happy to see that the DGA is put in place to allow us to work together more effectively to achieve positive results for the young people in our communities.

The Durham 2025 campaign aims to achieve the prestigious title of UK City of Culture 2025 for the whole of County Durham.

Earlier this month, the Department for Digital Culture, Media and Sport announced County Durham as one of eight places to be on the long list.
