Miss America at 100: Roundtable devoted to the history of the organization, Rowan’s digital archives project | Rowan today

A Century of the Miss America Organization and Rowan University’s work to digitize the organization’s vast archives will be the topics of a panel discussion on Monday, November 15 at 7 p.m. in Room 104 of Business Hall, 201 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro.

The event, “The Road to 100 More”, will be held in person and will also be offered virtually. It is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required.

The panel discussion will include: Shantel Krebs, president of the Miss America Organization; Miss New Jersey 2021 Alyssa Sullivan, a Rowan 2020 alumnus; and Professor Katherine Turner, director of the Miss America Archives Project in Rowan and coordinator of the American Studies program.

Joanne Connor, Chief of Staff to the President and Liaison to the Board of Directors, will act as moderator.

Last spring, Rowan struck a deal with the Miss America Organization to scan artifacts from the Miss America Pageant, including program books, jewelry crowns, oil paintings, films, and business records, between others. Led by history professor Turner, the students strive to preserve the rich history of the Miss America organization for future use by academics around the world.

Their work will be hosted in the new Rowan digital collections, hosted by Rowan Libraries.

After the event roundtable, in-person attendees will have the chance to browse artifacts from the Miss America organization. All in-person or virtual participants will also have the chance to view portions of the digital archive. Rowan students involved in the digitization project are also expected to attend the event to discuss their work.

“The Road to 100 More” is sponsored by the Office of the President, the Women’s Alliance Network, the Office of Alumni Engagement and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
