Do you have any evidence (on the alliance with the BJP)? The people of Punjab know me. I have always supported and will support farmers. I expect honesty from a former Indian hockey captain. Capt Amarinder Singh, former CM
Sources in the camp of the chief minister did not exclude that the former CM plays a key role of interlocutor to end the struggle of the farmers, because he had to travel to the national capital again for crucial meetings.
Ex-CM likely to have an electoral pact with the BJP
Capt Amarinder’s party will ultimately be supported by the BJP. He also met Interior Minister Amit Shah. They may form an alliance ahead of the 2022 election.
To assess the basic issues, in particular the agitation of the farmers, the former CM is also reportedly checking his popularity in different pockets of the Punjab. An announcement on the formation of a new political formation by the former CM was expected within two weeks.
The former CM has already made it clear that he will leave Congress, but will not join the BJP. He also said he would field a strong candidate in the state election next year against Sidhu, whose opposition led to his ouster. There are indications that the former CM, having been instrumental in resolving the farmers’ unrest, may opt for a post-election alliance with the BJP.
