From Narayana Murthy to Arvind Krishna, IIT-Kanpur shines on the world map


New Delhi, December 5: With IIT-Bombay alumnus Parag Agrawal turning into Twitter’s new CEO, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – the country’s premier institute of higher education – has once again taken the spotlight in the world. whole world.

Known for producing the best innovators, scientists, academics, economists and politicians for years, IIT-Kanpur has consistently maintained a distinct place among the top five IITs (India currently has 23 IITs).

Established by an Act of Parliament in 1959, IIT-K was established with the help of a consortium of nine leading American research universities under the Kanpur Indo-American Program (KIAP).

Located on Grand Trunk Road near the town of Kalyanpur, the institute currently has nearly 6,478 students – 3,938 undergraduates, 2,540 post-graduate students – and around 500 research associates.

The institute also opened an office in New York, with former student and technologist Sanjiv Khosla as the institute’s overseas brand ambassador.

NR Narayana Murthy

Murthy founded Infosys in 1981, which today is a highly innovative global software services company. Murthy conceptualized, articulated and implemented the Global Delivery Model (GDM), which has become the backbone of the Indian software industry. In 2014, Murthy was ranked 13th among CNBC’s 25 Global CEOs and was named one of Fortune’s “12 Greatest Entrepreneurs of Our Time” in 2012. He has received numerous awards, including the Legion of Honor of France, CBE of Great Britain and Padma Vibhushan.

Arvind krishna

Currently chairman and CEO of tech giant IBM, Krishna has led the creation and expansion of new markets for IBM in artificial intelligence, cloud, quantum computing and blockchain. He was a driving force behind the $ 34 billion acquisition of Red Hat by IBM in 2019. After earning his BTech from IIT-K, he moved to the United States to earn a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1991.

Ashwini Vaishnaw

Currently Union Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, Vaishnaw represents Odisha in Rajya Sabha. In 2008, Vaishnaw moved to the United States to earn his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. After his MBA, Vaishnaw returned to India and joined GE Transportation as Managing Director. Subsequently, he joined Siemens as Vice President, Locomotives, and Head, Urban Infrastructure Strategy.

Duvvuri Subbarao

As a renowned economist and central banker, Subbarao was the 22nd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 2008 to 2013 and served under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. After graduating in physics from IIT Kharagpur in 1969, he obtained a master’s degree in physics from IIT-Kanpur. Subbarao won the Civil Service Exam in 1972 and was assigned to the Andhra Pradesh cadre. In 1978 he received a master’s degree in economics from Ohio State University. He is currently Distinguished Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore.

Ashok Jhunjhunwala

Jhunjhunwala has been a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras since 1981. During his career he has made a significant contribution to the innovation and adoption of technologies in the Indian context. His research areas include optical communication, computer networks, wireless communication, decentralized solar and electric vehicles. He received the Padma Shri in 2002.

Rakesh Gangwal

Billionaire businessman and co-founder of airline IndiGo, Gangwal was the former CEO and chairman of the US Airways group. From June 2003 to August 2007, Gangwal was Chairman, President and CEO of Worldspan Technologies, a provider of travel technology and information services. In 2020, he was ranked No. 359 on the Forbes list of the 400 richest people in the United States.

Rakesh K. Jain

Jain is Andrew Werk Cook Professor of Tumor Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) at Harvard Medical School and Director of the EL Steele Laboratories for Tumor Biology at MGH. In 2015, Jain received honorary doctorates from Duke University, KU Leuven, Belgium, and IIT-Kanpur. In 2013, he was awarded the National Medal of Sciences. He is considered a pioneer in the field of the tumor microenvironment and is widely recognized for his seminal discoveries in tumor biology, drug delivery, in vivo imaging, and bioengineering.

Som Mittal

A business executive with more than three decades of experience in the computer and automotive industries, Mittal has served as chairman of the computer industry’s umbrella organization, Nasscom. He created the Data Security Council of India, which promotes data protection and develops best practices in security and privacy. The World Alliance of Information Technology and Services (WITSA) awarded him an Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to the growth of the global ICT industry.

Mukesh Bansal

Bansal founded the fashion e-commerce company Myntra and is currently the CEO of cure.fit.
