The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (SHA), a global industry network for the hospitality sector, has appointed tourism veteran Glenn Mandziuk as chief executive. It will begin in April this year.
He replaces Madhu Rajesh, the founding CEO of SHA, who has taken on a new role as senior director, water and agriculture, at soft drink company The Coca-Cola Company.
SHA members include giants like Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International and Hilton Worldwide. In a press release, the group said it covered 30% of hotel rooms worldwide.
SHA, spun off from the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) as an independent charity in 2020, offers free tools to calculate hotel water use and carbon footprint. He also works on issues such as tackling human rights abuses and increasing youth employment.
Mandziuk has over 25 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality industry. He was previously President and CEO of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association of Canada and holds a Masters in Environmental Design from the University of Calgary. He is currently a director of the World Sustainable Tourism Council and the Responsible Tourism Institute.
“While the external environment remains challenging for the industry, the opportunities and the urgency of the need to take significant and rapid action to advance sustainable development globally have never been higher,” said Wolfgang Neumann, president of SHA, in a statement announcing the new CEO.
The hotel sector contributed approximately 1 percent global emissions before the Covid-19 pandemic. Research has shown that industry must reduce emissions by 66% by 2030 and 90% by 2050, to help limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius.
