PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) have joined with other global telecom operators to explore next-generation technology to make its network more efficient, resilient, flexible and intelligent. Together with members of the Global Alliance for Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN), PLDT and Smart began to study network disaggregation, both vertical and horizontal.
In vertical disaggregation, network functions decouple software from hardware, allowing multiple combinations to be used. Horizontal disaggregation, on the other hand, breaks down established network functions into more granular pieces and new interfaces are designed and specified.
This creates more actors capable of developing specific components of the overall architecture, leading to a larger ecosystem, accelerating innovation and obtaining better and more profitable solutions.

“Working with leading operators around the world and getting them to accept our contributions and analyzes as a co-author of NGMN’s latest white paper on ODiN (Operating Disaggregated Networks), strengthens PLDT and Smart’s thought leadership on the scene. global, ”said Mario Tamayo, Director of Technology at PLDT and Smart. “This allows us to elevate our network, solutions and skills to be at the level of international operators and to bring world-class services and technologies to our own customers here in the Philippines.”
Network disaggregation
The disaggregation of the network is seen both as a consequence of digital transformation and as an accelerator of this journey. As a result, networks are becoming more and more agile, flexible and responsive. All these elements make it possible to provide new communication services adapted to the needs of the users.
“We are now developing our expertise through our involvement in projects like this and by working with experts from all over the world so that we can apply our learnings on our network when it becomes beneficial for businesses and the time is right”, said Arvin Siena. , Head of the Technology Strategy and Transformation Office of PLDT and Smart and Member of the Board of Directors of NGMN. “We believe that network disaggregation, which includes the cloud native implementation of Core and Open RAN (ORAN), offers operators great potential to be more agile and cost effective in operating the network. With this in mind, PLDT and Smart are also preparing the bases for the Open RAN experiment, which is a major component of network disintegration, in its laboratory or Technolab.
Besides PLDT and Smart, other NGMN Alliance members who contributed to the white paper include experts from Deutsche Telekom, Bell Canada, British Telecom, China Mobile, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telus, 1 & 1, US Cellular, Chunghwa Telecom and Turkcell.
NGMN Alliance
The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) is a forum founded by the world’s leading mobile network operators and open to all partners in the mobile industry. Its goal is to ensure that next-generation network infrastructure, service platforms and devices will meet operator demands and ultimately meet end-user demand and expectations.
The vision of the NGMN Alliance is to provide impactful advice to the industry to achieve innovative, sustainable and affordable mobile telecommunications services for the end user, with particular emphasis on mastering the path of disaggregation. / the operation of disaggregated networks, the Green Future networks and 6G, while continuing to support the full implementation of 5G.
NGMN seeks to incorporate the views of all interested stakeholders in the telecommunications industry and is open to three categories of participants (NGMN partners): mobile network operators (members), vendors, software companies and other stakeholders. industry (contributors), as well as research institutes (advisers).
