PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) have joined with other global telecom operators to explore next-generation technology to make its network more efficient, resilient, flexible and intelligent. Together with members of the Global Alliance for Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN), PLDT and Smart began to study network disaggregation, both vertical and horizontal.
In vertical disaggregation, network functions decouple software from hardware, allowing multiple combinations to be used. Horizontal disaggregation, on the other hand, breaks down established network functions into more granular pieces and new interfaces are designed and specified.
This creates more actors capable of developing specific components of the overall architecture, leading to a larger ecosystem, accelerating innovation and obtaining better and more profitable solutions.
