Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena: Dinesh Gunawardena is sworn in as Sri Lanka’s 15th Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office in Flower Road, Colombo on July 22, 2022. The 73-year-old was sworn in by Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Dinesh Gunawardena, who was appointed interior minister in April by then-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was chosen for the post of prime minister after much discussion within the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Party (SLPP) on 21 July. He was sworn in along with 17 other ministers.

It comes after former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as Sri Lanka’s eighth president on July 21 after winning the parliamentary vote, following Gotabaya’s resignation from his post amid massive protests.

With the swearing in of Sri Lanka’s new prime minister, the island nation aims to kick-start stalled work to pull the country out of one of its worst economic crises that has led to massive food and fuel shortages.
