Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) celebrated 2,022 student interns and hosts at the Student Internship Program (SIP) Summer Luncheon held on June 24 at the Crowne Plaza Shenandoah. One hundred and seventy-two students from across the community participated in the program designed to give grade 12 students a career insight.

Luncheon keynote speaker Col. Brian Duffy, USAF (Retired), spoke about his experiences working for NASA as an astronaut and pilot, shared photos from space and offered insights into life . Colonel Duffy urged the students to “be a bulldog!” and not giving up on a problem until it is solved or a goal until it is achieved. Luncheon guests also heard testimonials from three interns, including Abbie Johnson, a 2016 SIP participant who now works full-time at Conroe ISD in the communications department where she completed an internship before her senior year of high school.
EfTA staff partner with businesses and community volunteers in a wide range of fields eager to share their professional knowledge. The EfTA received over 200 applications from students keen to gain real-world experience. For the first time in three years, students had the option of working in person for 80 hours over two weeks, or choosing a small group virtual mentoring option. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and practice valuable skills that are essential not only to their future profession, but to life as a whole. Some of these internships also offered students the opportunity to practice the skills in real-life settings. For example, students paired with mentors from PBK architects learned how to use industry software to build their dream home. Throughout June, the EfTA offered additional career panels and workshops for students to further develop their professional skills. Students will continue to work alongside professionals in their chosen fields until the end of July.
